Hammaslääketieteen opiskelijat pääsevät kandikesän aikana toimimaan ensimmäistä kertaa hammaslääkärin tehtävissä viransijaisena. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää opiskelijoiden valmiuksia työelämään ennen viransijaisuutta, kokemuksia viransijaisena toimimisesta sekä sen merkitystä ammatilliseen kehittymiseen.
Kyselytutkimuksen kohderyhmänä olivat Suomen hammaslääketieteen opetusyksiköiden vuosien 2019–2020 viidensien vuosikurssien opiskelijat. Kohderyhmästä (n = 171) 39 % (n = 66) vastasi e-lomakekyselyyn.
Opiskelijat arvioivat peruskoulutuksen antamat valmiudet työelämään hyviksi, vaikka suurin osa olisi kaivannut lisää kliinistä harjoitusta ennen viransijaisuutta. Viransijaisuuskokemuksiin vaikuttivat opiskelijoiden arviot omista valmiuksistaan, vastaanoton koko ja työpaikkasektori. Perehdytys ja ohjaus arvioitiin hyvin toteutuneiksi, vaikka niissä ilmeni myös puutteita. Viransijaisuuskokemus lisäsi opiskelijoiden valmiuksia, asiantuntijuutta ja ammatillista itsevarmuutta.
Neljän vuoden hammaslääkärikoulutuksen opintojen koettiin antaneen hyvät valmiudet kandikesään. Viransijaisuus koettiin monin tavoin hyödylliseksi. Sen nähtiin lisäävän opiskelijoiden ammatillista itsevarmuutta, jolla puolestaan oli merkitsevästi vaikutusta töissä pärjäämiseen ja viihtymiseen.

Dental students: readiness and experiences as a dentist
After completing their 4th year of studies, undergraduate dental students are given permission to temporarily pursue the activities of a licensed professional under supervision. This practical period usually takes place during the summer between the 4th and 5th semester. This study aims to find out how well the university dental studies prepare students to starting their careers and how the students experience the practical work. Furthermore, this study examines the students’ experiences of pursuing the activities of a professional and the significance that this has for their expertise.
The study was conducted as a questionnaire survey which was sent to every 5th-year dental student in Finland. The size of the target group was 171 students and 39% (n=66) of them responded to the survey. The data was collected using an e-questionnaire.
The students evaluated that the dental education equipped them with good competence to work as dentists, even though most responded that they would have needed more clinical practice than was available in their studies. The level of professional confidence of the students and the size and specialty of the dental practices the students had worked in had a significant impact on the students’ experiences. The orientation and guidance that the students received were evaluated as good, despite some observed deficiencies. The students’ competence, expertise and professional confidence increased during the practical period.
The results of the study show that four semesters of dental studies at university had provided the students with adequate skills and capabilities to work as a dentist. The practical period was a beneficial experience for the students. It increased their professional confidence, which was found to have a significant effect on their well-being at work.
