Pohjoismaiden väestöt olivat pitkään etnisesti suhteellisen homogeenisia, mutta 1900-luvun lopulta lähtien ne ovat muuttuneet yhä monikulttuurisemmiksi. Tämä artikkeli käsittelee kysymystä, joka on noussut Pohjoismaissa esiin vasta viime aikoina: Heijastuuko etnisen monimuotoisuuden lisääntyminen väestön suun terveydentilaan tai siihen, millä tavoin suun sairaudet väestössä ilmenevät?
Tässä katsauksessa esitetään tutkimustietoa esimerkiksi siitä, miten geneettiset ja sosiaaliset tekijät vaikuttavat karieksen ja parodontiitin kehittymiseen. Katsauksessa kysytään myös, asettavatko eri väestöryhmien erilaiset kulttuuriset ja sosiaaliset piirteet tai yksilölliset suunterveyteen liittyvät näkökulmat uusia, aiemmasta poikkeavia vaatimuksia pohjoismaisille suun terveydenhuoltojärjestelmille. Lisäksi pohditaan, millä tavoin hammashoitohenkilöstön pitäisi varautua muutoksiin, jotka liittyvät erilaisen kulttuuritaustan omaavien henkilöiden ja ryhmien hoidontarpeeseen.

Increasing ethnic diversity in the Nordic countries – oral health implications
The populations of the Nordic countries have long been, relatively, ethnically homogeneous, but, since the late 20th century, have become increasingly multicultural. The present focus paper addresses a question which has therefore arisen only relatively recently in the Nordic countries, namely whether increasing ethnic diversity in the population is also reflected in the oral health status and in the diversity of the manifestation of oral diseases. We present some of the available scientific evidence addressing these highly relevant questions, e.g., the influence of genetic and social factors on the development of caries and periodontitis. Furthermore, we touch on whether diverse cultural and social traits, as well as individual viewpoints, place new and different demands on the Nordic oral health care systems. In addition, we reflect on how the dental staff might need to be prepared for potential changes in treatment needs seen among inhabitants in the Nordic countries with a diverse cultural background.
